Size and mass of atoms; isotopes

Most of an atom's mass is packed into a nucleus thousands of times smaller than the atom itself.

What you need to know

  • An atom has a radius of about 0.1 nm (1 × 10⁻¹⁰ m), while a nucleus is about 1 × 10⁻¹⁴ m and less than 1/10 000 of the atom's radius.
  • Almost all atomic mass is in the nucleus; protons and neutrons each have relative mass 1, while an electron's relative mass is very small.
  • Mass number is the number of protons plus neutrons, and isotopes are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons.
  • In chemical-symbol notation, mass number goes top-left and atomic number bottom-left; these values can be used to work out particle numbers.

The big picture

Atoms are extremely small, with a radius of about 0.1 nm, or 1 × 10⁻¹⁰ m, while a nucleus has a radius of about 1 × 10⁻¹⁴ m and is less than one ten-thousandth of the atom's radius. Almost all of an atom's mass is in its nucleus; protons and neutrons each have relative mass 1, while an electron's relative mass is very small. Mass number is the total number of protons and neutrons, and chemical-symbol notation places mass number at the top-left and atomic number at the bottom-left. Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons are isotopes.
