Cell differentiation
Every cell in your body has the same instructions — so how does a muscle cell end up nothing like a nerve cell?

- Differentiation is when a cell acquires different sub-cellular structures to carry out a specific function.

The big picture
Cell differentiation is the process by which a cell develops specialised sub-cellular structures so it can carry out a specific function. As an organism develops, its cells differentiate — each acquiring the structures suited to its particular role. In animals, most differentiation happens at an early stage of development, and in mature animals cell division is mainly restricted to repair and replacement. Many plant cells, by contrast, retain the ability to differentiate throughout the plant's entire life.
